RIBA announces 2009 Council Election results

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) today announces the results of the RIBA Council Elections 2009.

The six nationally elected seats were awarded to the following Chartered Members, who will sit on Council for a three-year term from 2009 – 2012:

  • John Assael
  • Sir Sydney Chapman
  • Tzena James
  • Paul Fletcher
  • Alan Shingler
  • Peter Stewart

 

The following Chartered Members have been appointed as Regional Council Members, they will also serve a three-year term:

  • East Midlands - Derek Cottrell and William Smedley 
  • North East - Peter Udall and Dolan Conway
  • North West - Matt Brook and Simone Ridyard
  • Yorkshire - Ian Collins and Gerard Bareham

 

Alex Bancroft and Sara Tilley were elected as the Student Members of Council, and Elena Tsolakis as the Graduate Member of Council ; all three will serve a one - year term. All Council appointments will commence from 1 September 2009.

The RIBA is governed by a body of sixty trustees, elected from among the RIBA membership, the majority of whom are chartered architects. Chaired by the President, Council meets four times annually and is ultimately responsible for the conduct and development of the institute. Council passes down detailed responsibility and technical focus to the four subsidiary companies of the RIBA, each with its own board of directors and trustees.

The election was independently conducted by Electoral Reform Services, using the single transferable vote electoral system.

  2. Any current Chartered Member was eligible to stand for one of the six vacancies in 2009. The following Nationally Elected Councillors will continue to serve on Council in the 2009-10 session: Russell Brown, Peter Caplehorn, Paul Davis, Jane Duncan, Annette Fisher, Brian Godfrey, Stephen Hodder, Tony Lloyd, Richard Parnaby, Oliver Richards, Nick Willson and Neil Wilson.
  3. To be eligible for Council, candidates must be UK-based students who are Student Members or eligible to be Student Members.
