The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) have announced plans to renew their agreement on joint chartered membership.

The agreement between the two organisations was initially established in 1991, enabling registered architects born in Scotland or educated to Part 2 standard, or above, at a Scottish School of Architecture, to be eligible for joint chartered membership of both the RIAS and the RIBA.

RIBA President Ruth Reed said:

"The RIBA is pleased to announce the renewal of our partnership with the RIAS, offering eligible chartered members the flexibility and recognition of both organisations, whilst recognising the independent status of the RIAS. The agreement reinforces our close working relationship, and we look forward to taking this agreement forward."

RIAS President David Dunbar said:

"The Institute and the Incorporation have worked together since the inception of the RIAS in 1916. Our relationship is one of the most enduring and crucial within the UK construction industry. It ensures that architects in the UK can speak with one voice to support our shared goal, the continuous improvement of the built environment. Scottish architects gain much by being members of both organisations, we are a small nation but working with our UK partners enhances our overall standing."
