The Mapledene Estate was the focus of this education project, but there are plenty of other case studies available. Why not explore the history of other post-war housing developments in Hackney| and beyond Hackney|? Every quarter of London has a notable scheme, contributing to the city's distinctive clash of architectural styles and materials. There are rich archives of material for these examples in both the Hackney Archives| and the RIBA British Architectural Library| collections.
What is especially interesting is that many are being actively redeveloped at the moment. Residents are being actively consulted on their reincarnation, with plenty of information and debate in the press as a result. Most want radical change; a few, like the Twentieth Century Society and Docomomo, argue for preservation. A rich debate can be easily tapped into, informing study across the school curriculum.
